The Number 42

         There are many scenes in this movie that show racial discrimination against African Americans, with specific examples occurring during sports. There is one scene that really caught my attention because of how differently African Americans were treated.  In this part of the movie Jackie Robinson got brought up to play in the majors for the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Dodgers were playing the Philadelphia Phillies and the manager of the Phillies, Ben Chapman, kept saying cold, rude, and horrifying racial verbal slurs while Jackie Robinson was up to bat. Jackie Robinson was a courageous person that didn’t succumb and fight back to the effects of those words.  The bullying was continuous and it finally got to Jackie. Instead of taking his anger out to this man, Jackie took a bat went into the hallway near the locker room and let out his anger by smashing his bat against the wall to let out the hurt, anger, and rage.  After he came back he was up to bat and one of his teammates went up to Ben Chapman and set him straight and after that Chapman didn’t scream out at him. While Robinson was up to bat he got a hit and from there he basically stole his way to home base showing everybody that he is a true baseball player.  To recognize Jackie Robinson every year in April, every team in Major League Baseball (MLB) wears the number 42 as a reminder of all of his remarkable and historic achievements. The number 42 is the only number retired and no one currently playing in the MLB wears the number 42. Jackie Robinson is known as a hero that changed the game of baseball from his very first step onto the field.

                                                        Enjoyment of Movies

            I have a lot of favorite movies, so it is hard for me to choose just one.  I like different kinds of movies for different reasons and since I don’t think I could just pick one specific movie I will choose a genre that I enjoy the most.  The genre I enjoy the most is comedy. Some features of comedy include humor, amusement, fun, and surprise. Comedy instills fun in people and creates an emotion of happiness that everybody enjoys feeling. To me a comedy is always a feel-good movie and you can guarantee that you will laugh and enjoy yourself almost every time.  Other genres are either gory, frightening, mysterious, or make you think. With a comedy you can just watch and enjoy the movie without having to deal with other distractions that come along with other genres. Comedies are the best kind of genre because they are lighthearted films that are supposed to humor, entertain, and provide enjoyment to all people.

The Life of Joy Harjo

            Joy Harjo in the book Crazy Brave seems to be a determined, loyal, and a unique person. She seemed very loyal to her family, especially her mom. She truly cared for her mom and wanted what was best for her, but couldn’t do or say anything to protect her because of her stepfather.  Joy expressed her feelings through paintings or writing poems about her life and all of the cruel and unusual aspects that occurred.  Joy wanted to get out of the life she was living so she went to a school in New Mexico; it was in that moment that she was free. Joy got involved with music and stated, “Music is a direct communication with the sacred”(p.85). Her stepfather forbade her to sing in their household, so once she was at school she had no one to be afraid of to sing where and what she wanted.  Joy expressed her feelings in different way then most people. I don’t think she gets very emotionally close to anyone expect for her close family, but she does find a way to express what she is feeling through poems. The poems that she writes describes the beliefs that she has and what she truly cares about in life. In the Eagle Poem (p.154-155) that she wrote, I think she describes her religious beliefs and her beliefs about the circle of life through the beauty of an eagle. Joy Harjo is a very unique person with a lot interesting viewpoints on life and I think each poem and picture that she creates is a piece of art that describes her in a diverse way.

            Everyone has a different way to deal with stress, hardship, and adversity.  How people cope with life makes a person who they are and how they deal with the hard times.

Study Abroad

Study Abroad

            I’m very interested in studying abroad, so when I heard that they were going to be talking about the different trips that the program offers I knew I wanted to go.  I plan on studying abroad when I’m a junior because I feel that it is the right time to go. At that time you should know what your major is so you can study what you want in the location you want.  I was very interested in hearing about all of the different places you could study abroad.  There are 35 different short term and long term trips that they offer from the International Program. I learned about the amount of credits that you receive according to how long you stay and how much a trip would cost. Studying abroad would be an unforgettable experience to learn about different cultures and to get the chance to travel the world.

Facebook

        

I chose to expand on social media, specifically Facebook, which was the second writing we did in class. Yes, I am on Facebook but I do not use Facebook as much as others, which lets me feel comfortable letting my friends see everything on my profile.  I do not use very many other social media sites because I feel that it is unnecessary time waster.  I mostly use Facebook to see what my other friends who go to different schools are doing.  There are benefits that I enjoy from Facebook such as group messaging. Group messaging allows my group of friends from high school keep in touch from far distances. Other than keeping in touch with my friends and seeing what they are up to, I do not use Facebook that often.
